Started in November 2008, Blankets & Wine has grown steadily to become one of the most highly anticipated music events in Nairobi and beyond. Having now ventured into new territories within the wider East Africa region, what started out as a small group of lovers of afro-based music has become a movement that has more than earned itself the title of East Africa’s premier music experience.
Every month, thousands drive their families down to Mamba Village gardens with their maasai shukas, picnic baskets & wine all in the name of afro-based fusion music. From the amazing local talent of my favorites – Sauti Sol, Kenya’s ambasador to the world Eric Wainana and Kidum; as well as South Africa’s greats like Lira, TKZee and Liquideep (back again due to demand to perform this weekend) to international stars like Dwele.
Even though with popularity comes dilution by the masses; those who understand what the event has managed to achieve can hopefully see through the ‘bougie’ stereotype fog created by the young, vodka swigging fashion competing middleclass with unfortunately much else to do…. For it truly has encouraged domestic consumption of world class afro-based music, created and performed by African musicians and solidified the culture of live music consumption with a correlated lifestyle represented by key brand partners.
So yes, you will find me in my harem pants, sipping cheap wine and bopping to some awesome African beats. Check BBM (technically it will be twitter for me – @evemwaniki), and you will see; my status will be playing #Liquideep!
